It
may still be Spring on the calendar, but this does not mean it is feeling like
Spring outside, with the very warm weather we have experienced of late.
However, my lawn has certainly enjoyed the wonderful Spring rains and is as
green and lush as ever. It’s sort of like our Kiwanis Club; we enjoy the warmth
of fellowship as we thrive to hear the lush programs every week. Some of our
programs are humorous, some are heartwarming stories of life, some are educational,
while yet others are updates to what is happening in Greensboro. I take this moment
to give a big THANK YOU to our members who have enlisted the wonderful and
interesting speakers who have provided us with such great programs. Your
efforts are truly a cornerstone of our club and help our ability to recruit new
members. As your President, I have enjoyed being able to share a few moments during
each lunch talking with our speakers. It has been an immense pleasure.
The “dog
days of Summer” are almost upon us. As usual, our weekly lunch programs will
continue throughout the Summer, and there will also be opportunities to
socialize at our 5th Thursday
event on June 29th. This
event will be held at the new Union Square Campus on East Gate City Boulevard
in the downtown area. This new school of nursing is a joint collaboration
between Cone Health, GTCC, A&T, and UNCG, and our club will have the
opportunity to tour the facility and hear about this new addition to our city
first-hand. Our Kiwanis club’s Nature Play Yard, which opened last Fall in the
Ole Asheboro neighborhood on Gate City Boulevard, is scheduled to be highlighted
by the Kiwanis International Magazine during the second week of June. The City
of Greensboro Parks and Recreation is coordinating with the Public Affairs
department of Kiwanis International to take pictures and do a story. As details
are finalized, you will be informed through our Kiwanis Weekly Happenings so
all who wish can come and participate in this big event. (If anybody has access
to kids they can bring, that would be great for the pictures for the magazine).
On August 17th and
18th we have our cadre of Kiwanians who
enjoy marshalling at Hole #6 for the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country
Club. You will see some amazing golf and golfers up close and personal. If you
have not experienced this please join us. We then finish off August with our
final 5th Thursday
for this year on August 31st. Stay
tuned for more information on this as we get closer to the date. Your job is to
enjoy the summer, visit family, go on vacation, cool off in the
mountains AND bring a friend to a Kiwanis lunch on Thursday for a great
program, and/or a 5th Thursday
event and /or to the Wyndham Championship as a Marshall. So much to do, so many
potential new members. Everyone have a great summer!
